A few words about the logo of the Greek School of Manchester
Our logo has the shape of a shield by the standards of English schools, divided into four quarters.
The first quarter has the Greek flag with the cross and the nine stripes corresponding to the syllables of the motto of the Greek Revolution of 1821, ‘E-lef-the-ri-a ee tha-na-tos’ (Freedom or death).
The second quarter has the head of the goddess Athena wearing a helmet. Athena was chosen mainly for her wisdom, which is fundamental to the educational process.
The third quarter has an olive branch. The olive tree is one of the most iconic trees in Greek culture and it symbolises peace and friendship.
The fourth quarter has an Athenian trireme, a symbol of the rich Greek maritime history.
In the centre of the shield there is a special place for the worker bee, a symbol of Manchester, where the school is located.
